Your God is Too Safe

Your God is Too Safe - Week 4

Here at the Christian Book Club we are entering our last week with “Your God is Too Safe”. I have really enjoyed the book and I have enjoyed reading your comments. Thank you for your comments! This week we will be reading chapter 18 - 22 and the Epilogue. I have really gotten a lot out of the exhortations towards the spiritual disciplines. I liked how Chapter 17 talked about dead space. We seem to have so little quiet times in our lives. I did a quick overview of this weeks chapters. You will find some great stories and illustrations throughout. I look forward to your comments.

Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NIV)
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.

I hope we will all, like Habakkuk, pray and praise will all of our hearts, regardless of circumstance.

Next week we start with Max Lucado’s “Numbers of Hope 3:16″. If you don’t have your copy you need to get one. Later on this year we are going to read another book by Mark Buchanan called “Holy Wild” so I am sure we will be challenged once again. Have a blessed week!

Your God is Too Safe - Discussion 4

We are continuing to read Your God is Too Safe on the Christian Book Club. I wanted to discuss Chapter 16. It’s about confession and the importance of having a safe person to talk with. I have encouraged people in our church to have as a priority in their lives, the making of a few relationships with people that they can be completely open and honest with. You need at least one of these people in your life, and if you are really blessed you have two or three. When people ask me how to find these people I tell them it starts with being a person who is safe.

The power of confession is huge. When something that has long been in darkness is finally brought to light there is so much freedom. It is the amazing paradox, that which we struggle to keep hidden is what keeps us in captivity. In getting the deepest, darkest, most shameful secrets of our lives into the open we can begin to experience the life God intended for us.

I love the story at the end of the chapter about the King of Prussia.

“Prisoner, why are you here?”

“I robbed a man, Your Majesty.”

“And are you guilty?”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Frederick called the guard over. Pointing at the man who confessed, he said, “Release this man immediately. I will not have this scoundrel thief kept here where he might corrupt all these other fine, virtuous, and innocent men.”

That is a great story! I plan on making a little change to the site this weekend, so if you come to the site and it looks different don’t think you have gone to the wrong place. Blessings.

Your God is Too Safe - Week 3

I can’t believe how quickly this month is going by. As I have said I am really enjoying Your God is Too Safe. Each chapter seems to give me something new to think about. Your comments have also helped me to see things that I missed in my reading. That is why I enjoy reading books like this in a Christian Book Club setting.

This week we will be reading and discussing Chapters 13 - 17. We are moving into “The Holy Wild”. I just did a quick preview scan and I think we are in for some very interesting reading. I look forward to reading your comments. Don’t forget that you can comment on each others comments. If you get a chance this week, try to do that for one another. Just use the Reply to This Comment tab. If you are new to the site your first comment has to be moderated by me. That is done so that spammers can’t get in and put garbage on the site. After I approve your first comment, your following comments will just pop right up.

It is time to get ready for June’s book which is Hope 3:16 by Max Lucado. I am looking forward to the book. I haven’t read it yet, but Max Lucado is an excellent writer and speaker. If you ever get to go to a conference where he is speaking you will enjoy it. If you need to order the book I will give you a link to do that here.

Thank you all for your participation. I hope you are enjoying this club as much as I am.

Your God is Too Safe - Discussion 3

This week on Christian Book Club we are continuing our reading of Your God is Too Safe by Mark Buchanan.

By Mark Buchanan

I am interested in reading your comments on some of these thoughts from the book

On page 106 “What is that for which Christ has taken hold of you”?

Chapter 11 talks about the difference between the ethics of the the Pharisees and the ethics of Jesus. The question that illustrates the difference was great. Page 108 “The Pharisee’s question was not “How can I glorify God?” It was “How can I avoid bringing disgrace to God”? I think Chapter 11 is very powerful in the way it relates to ministry, what do you think?

What do you think of the illustration of the marketplace on page 113?

Hope you are enjoying the book as much as I am!

Your God is Too Safe - Week 2

This week on Christian Book Club we will be reading chapters 7 - 12 of “Your God is Too Safe”. I have appreciated all your comments and I personally am enjoying the book very much. I find that there are ideas in each chapter that really make me stop and think. In this weeks chapters I already have a few favorites.

In chapter 7 Jacob wrestles with God and afterward he walks with a limp. Until we walk with a limp in our Christian walk, we really don’t rely on God.

In chapter 8 I love the statement, “Life isn’t fair…do the right thing”. This may be my new favorite saying.

In chapter 9 this was my favorite, “pride keeps showing up in disguise, bearing a saints name”.

I hope you are enjoying the book. I look forward to your comments.

P.S. Every now and then I need to write an article like the one I wrote called “How to Start a Christian Book Club“. In order to get this site to rank well in the search results there are some site maintenance things I have to do which includes the occasional article that is a little off topic from the regular discussion article. If you are getting the free email subscription those articles will show up as well. Sorry! Once the site moves up in the search results I won’t have to do it very often. The better the search results the more people we will have in the book club. Thanks for your patience. Blessings!

Your God is Too Safe - Discussion 2

I have been enjoying your comments on Christian Book Club Online this week. I wanted to share some of the things that jumped out at me as I was reading this week and get your feedback. I was touched when I read the story of Paul Yonggi Cho on page 47. What a great picture of bitterness and forgiveness. I re-read it twice and was all goose pimply both times. I enjoyed the discussion on obedience on pages 48-50 as it related to Jonah. What did you think?

I agree with the idea that technology has been a blessing and a curse. What do you think? Losing our imagination causes us to lose the idea of the Christian life as an adventure. I also like the discussion on page 42 that revolved around the question “What is it you want Me to do for you? I would like to hear from you about these things and about your thoughts as well.
