Your God is Too Safe - Discussion 3

This week on Christian Book Club we are continuing our reading of Your God is Too Safe by Mark Buchanan.

37748: Your God Is Too Safe Your God Is Too Safe
By Mark Buchanan

I am interested in reading your comments on some of these thoughts from the book

On page 106 “What is that for which Christ has taken hold of you”?

Chapter 11 talks about the difference between the ethics of the the Pharisees and the ethics of Jesus. The question that illustrates the difference was great. Page 108 “The Pharisee’s question was not “How can I glorify God?” It was “How can I avoid bringing disgrace to God”? I think Chapter 11 is very powerful in the way it relates to ministry, what do you think?

What do you think of the illustration of the marketplace on page 113?

Hope you are enjoying the book as much as I am!

  1. I thought the chapters this week were 6-12…oops…I’m behind. Can I comment on what I’ve read? I’ll catch up!

Page 75 hit me between the eyes about prayer. God has REALLY been hounding me about my time or lack of time I spend talking to Him. What spoke to me here was the fact that we often pray something knowing that we are about to do whatever we feel like doing. Yeah I’ve so done that in the past. What conviction I felt when I read that sentence.

Page 79 talks about how amazed the author is about how many people meet God through tragedy. I know this one first hand. My beautiful, vibrant, healthy 31 year old cousin (with 2 small children, gorgeous husband, good job, huge house) died at the age of 32 from cancer. She was diagnosed and 11 months later died. It has been 3 years now and I still hurt over it. What came out of that though was 2 saved souls (hers and her husband’s). They quit relying on themselves and found Jesus. It was sweet and tragic to be a part of it. God has been good to her husband though…he is about to get remarried to a wonderful God-fearing woman who loves his children as her own. God is good!

Page 95 “bluffing”…have you noticed just how society likes to call something a “nice” term instead of what it really is? I work in the criminal justice field and it drives me insane how we have to be “politically correct”. That is satan’s why of making us not see things as they really are….what is the definition of repent? It is “say the same thing”. We have to called it what God calls it and not sugar coat life.

Page 106. This makes me think of my husband. I prayed for years that he would be the spiritual leader in our home. Some people change gradually. He changed overnight! It has been amazing to see. He is truly living this because Christ has taken a hold of him and Brian wants to live totally for Him.

Chapter 11 was excellent. I am currently reading (yes I read alot!) . The study that has been done shows that the world sees Christians as what we are not or what we can’t do instead of WHO we follow. Mark Buchanan nailed it on the head years before this study even took place. This should slap us awake but it doesn’t seem to be happening. There is enough negative in the world already. Christians should not be adding to it at all!

Page 111 The question Christ would have us ask is not “How will this or that affect my witness?” His question is “What can I do to have effective witness?”

I read this to my husband and his response was AMEN…read that again. It makes him mad as fire when people will not go where the lost people are…they are not going to always come to us. We need to be the beautiful feet that brings the good news!
    Isaiah 52:7
    How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
    who proclaim peace,
    who bring good tidings,
    who proclaim salvation,
    who say to Zion,
    “Your God reigns!”

Page 111 “It means that we’re to go in the same authority, with the same power, with the same heart after God” I often forget that I have that same power. I want to start remembering that and living my life using that power.

[I'll continue this tomorrow with the other chapters]

  2. Hi Wendy,

I appreciate your comments. One of the things I enjoy about reading a book with other people is getting to see what pops out at them. I went and re-read all of the pages you brought up. I agree with you about prayer. I always need to spend more time with him. I am sorry to hear about your cousin and yet blessed to hear of God’s goodness in the midst of it. I also want to live this life in the power and authority that God gives us. To live life for Him, with impact. Working in the criminal justice system must be a challenge. I spent five years as a prison chaplain and it was interesting. I will be praying for you.
